Summary and Critical Analysis of Chaucerââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Millerââ¬â¢s Taleâ⬠Geoffrey Chaucer starts ââ¬Å"The Millerââ¬â¢s Taleâ⬠out with an intriguing prologue. In this prologue, the Miller is found to be drunk due to his behavior towards the Reeve, and his judgment towards ââ¬Å"The Knightââ¬â¢s Tale.â⬠The Reeve and Miller have never seen eye to eye; they never have and never will. With this being said, the Miller tells a tale of a gullible carpenter whose wife cheats on him with an intelligent lodger. Since the Reeve is a carpenter, he becomes very frustrated about this tale and begs the Host and Miller to not tell it. The Reeve is overruled and the tale goes on. The first character in ââ¬Å"The Millerââ¬â¢s Taleâ⬠is John, the carpenter. John is a rich man who marries a young woman named Alison. John is also quite gullible, as the tale explains. Jealous of Alisonââ¬â¢s youth and beauty, he becomes very protective over his wife. This rich carpenter allows a lodger, Nicholas, to stay in his home. John does not need to take N icholasââ¬â¢s money because John is a wealthy man. A carpenter and a Reeve both have the same occupation, so John symbolizes the Reeve, who is on the journey to Canterbury with the Miller. The Miller uses John to irritate the Reeve by telling humorous flaws about him. The lodger is a poor, young, intelligent man named Nicholas. Contrast Recently while watching two old film classics, Vertigo and Notorious, I found myself thinking of other movies directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Most of his movies have many things in common, while remaining completely independent of each other. These two films have different plots, actors, and most obvious one is filmed in color the other black and white. Which leads me to believe that Alfred Hitchcock really knew what he was about; as a result his films all a have a distinctive theme about them. Both films eep you in a state of anticipation as the stories unfold and reveal the twist and turns that Alfred Hitchcock was famous for. Notorious was written in 1946 a year after World War II came to an end and the red-scare was sweeping the nation, yet Vertigo was written twelve years later in a completely different climate. Meaning the McCarthy era had come to an end and the United States was a different country then. Taking that into consideration its interesting the parallelisms these two films have. Each movie has a theme or a genre we could place them in, Notorious is a spy thriller imilar to a James Bond film, and Vertigo is a mystery thriller with a twist like The Sixth Sense. In Vertigo you dont see whats coming in the end, you are taken by surprise and the same can be said for Notorious. There isnt much dialogue in either film; instead the music and camera angles guide the movies to create the plot. Vertigo is shot in color and not Just plain colors, the colors are enhanced to be bold, and to stand out so that you notice them and the people surrounded by them. Alfred Hitchcock uses color to make a point, to show fear, tension, anxiety and love. In this ovie the color of Madelines green dress in the restaurant scene stands out against the red of the walls. It is what I noticed first. In Notorious he uses black and white; the shadows create a sinister effect surrounding the theme of the movie, which is communism, good guy/bad guy. The white of Alicia Hubermans dress as she attends a dinner at Alexs house is in stark contrast to the black of the tuxedos, the car and the dark of night. The cinematography of each film was thought out and tells us the story. So dialogue was not really needed, you could read the movies by listening to he music and watching the shifting patterns of light and shadow. Alfred Hitchcock was famous for using point-of-view shot, it is most noticeable in Notorious where Alicia in lying in bed after a night of drinking and the camera follows her upside down, so you feel a little unbalanced yourself while the scene is taking place. During the movie Vertigo the way the camera angles, scenes, point-of-view shots and the story itself creates the effect of the viewer having vertigo themselves. The music tells the story in Vertigo, you know when something new happens or is about to, it was ell timed and must have taken awhile to get it right, timing must have been everything. In Notorious the camera tells the story, the anticipation, you can feel the anxiety mount in the scene where Alicia and Alex have a party, they invite T. R. Devlin (played by Cary Grant) to attend. Before the party Alicia steals the key to the wine cellar where the secret the Germans are hiding is purported to be. The scene where she is holding the key clutched in her hand, the camera zooms in, you can almost see anxiety building in her heightens her awareness of that key. The camera zooms otally into her hand, its an amazing scene. I had to fast-forward my dvd through most of this because I couldnt handle the anticipation. Alicia is aware of the butler needing more champagne so he will need to get the key from Alex to enter the cellar, all the while knowing that she has it and cant return it until her and Devlin have had a chance to inspect the cellar. It is a most brilliant display of cinematography, the camera going back and forth between her hand and the champagne on ice. There are numerous scenes where the music and camera angles tell the story of what is appening or about to take place, and if you didnt know that these were both directed by Alfred Hitchcock, if you anything about him at all you could fgure out. Even though these two were directed with much time in-between them his style never really altered. Maybe this is the reason they are a good comparison for his work. Notorious and Vertigo, two different movies with two very similar themes. Music and camera shots. Each film has big name stars for that era, Cary Grant plays the debonair, charming T. R. Devlin, who is and agent for the U. S. , and he talks Alicia into taking on the position of an agent herself. She ends up falling in love with Devlin and looks to him to help her make her decisions, in essence leaning against him for support; likewise Kim Novak looks to Jimmy Stewarts character Johnnie Scottie Ferguson for support . Each of the female characters is portrayed as women with loose morals and seeming to have little or no self-respect or confidence. This is how Alfred Hitchcock portrayed many of his leading ladies, leading me to believe he was a masochist. Which strikes me as interesting because during this period of time women were viewed as pure, innocent, the homemakers? So why is it that he portrayed these women as tramps that could be bought? So while these two women are alone and independent they were still treated as property. Another interesting fact is that each character is playing someone other than who they are. Alicia Huber man goes undercover in Notorious for the sake and good of her country, she even marries a man she despises to fulfill that duty. Madeline/Judy acts out as Madeline through most of the movie until she commits suicide then she resumes being Judy(her true-self), until Johnnie finds her and makes her turn into Madeline , ecause he was so taken with Madeline. In most of Hitchcocks movies the female role is always playing another role inside of her role. Being someone else, probably for the sake of a man. Manipulation is a motif in these two films, a man using a woman to further his own wants and needs. Of course each lady has a choice to be made , but back in this time most women did what men told them. Now our leading ladies kick butt Just as much as the men take Angelina Jolies character in Tomb Raider, or a spy thriller Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the leading ladies today are nothing like the two adies in these movies. I wonder what Alfred Hitchcock would think of the modern film world?

William Blake William Blake (1757-1827) William Blake wrote during the Romantic period which was a span between 1785 - 1830. Other great writers during this time were Mary Wollstonecraft, Coleridge, Wordsworth, and others. Some said that the Romantic period was the fairy tale way of writing through symbolism and allegory and also an age for individualism. A crucial point by Romantic theorist referred to the mind, emotions, and imagination of the poet (Abrams, et al 5). In comparison to Blake's Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience Northrop Fry's distinction between the imagined states of innocence and experience is stated as thus: world of innocence: unfallen world/ unified self/ integration with nature/ time in harmony with rhythm of human existence. world of experience: fallen world/ fragmented divided self/ alienation from nature/ time as destructive, in opposition of human desire (Feldman). This can be seen in ?The Lamb,? and ?The Chimney Sweeper;? from Songs of Innocence and in Songs of Experience ?The Tyger,? and ?The Chimney Sweeper,?. Blake was little known as a poet during his lifetime. His reputation became established late in the 19th century. Blake's first book of poems was Poetical Sketches. This book of poems showed his dissatisfaction with the reigning poetic tradition and his restless quest for new forms and techniques (Abrams, et al 19). Blake was said to write symbolist poetry in which things such as a cloud, a flower, or a mountain was presented as an object imbued with significance beyond itself (Abrams, et al 8). Blake along with other poets explored visionary states of consciousness that are common among children but violate the standard categories of adult judgement (Abrams, et al 10). This can be seen in Blake's Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience. In Songs of Innocence the speaker is often a child and in Songs of Experience the speaker is often an adult (Mack, et al 184). This could be due to the fact that children thought to be of what innocent adults have already ?experienced.? Blake experimented with partial rhymes and novel rhythms and employed bold figures of speech that at times approximate symbols. One of the strongest features in Blake's philosophy was his belief in imagination as an active force. He attacked rationalism, authoritarianism, industrialization, and organized religion as destructive of creative and spiritual energies(Feldman). Blake said that the two group of poems Songs of Innocence and of Experience represent the world as it is envisioned by what he calls, ?two contrary states of the human soul,? (Abrams 19). In the Songs of Experience, such as ?London? and ?The Tyger,? Blake achieved his mature lyric techniques of metaphor and symbol which explode into a multiplicity of references (Abrams, et al 19). The Song of Innocence is almost full of brightness, cheer, and peace yet, the Songs of Experience is depicting a world worn and full of miserable human beings (Mack, et al 785). Blake's works range from simplicity and lyrical style as in the Songs of Innocence and Experience to more elaborate style such as in The Four Zoas. For some, Blake's works can be difficult at times. One reason is that the reader is reading Blake's visions in Blake's own terms (Dover). Blake said that, ? The Nature of my Work is Visionary or Imaginative.? What he meant by this is often misinterpreted; on that note Blake said, ?that which can be made Explicit to the Idiots is not worth my care?(Abrams). Even the introduction song to the Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience is a good example of not only Blake's views of the role of Innocence and Experience in regeneration, but also the complexity of the seemingly simple songs (Magill, et al 208). Some symbols in the poems are for instance the lamb in the Song of Innocence. The lamb is a symbol of Christ and his pureness and innocence. To get into Harvard or another Ivy League school, your letter of recommendation, like with all the other parts of your application, must be outstanding. Developing Managers in Business Essay Success in the knowledge economy comes to those who know themselves, their strengths, their values, and how they best perform (Peter Drucker) The main aim of this report is to focus on a particular management development programme and by identifying how it works to determine whether it has been effective in developing the manager for its business. The report looks at how certain management development programmes have been used to become shift/duty manager for a particular organisation. It identifies a range of formal and informal approaches that have been used to ensure effective outcomes. It also includes examining the main external and internal factors that have influenced management development. Furthermore the report identifies any shortcomings and changes that are required to improve the process of developmental management. The main method used to conduct this report was obtaining first hand information from a shift/duty manager at a local food industry; however, relevant literature resources have also been used to support views, evaluations and recommendations made. According to Lessem, R (1990) developmental management is humanistic in essence in other words the developmental manager values the whole team and values them for their inter-dependence. In the workplace individuals and managers unaware of certain behaviour patterns will unintentionally damage their personal effectiveness. When a manager understands the unique differences between individuals then they are in a more powerful position. They are better able to manage, understand, and lead people towards higher level of productivity, lower frustration, higher morale, and better retention rates. The type of management development programme focused on in this report is basic management training from shift/duty managers. The course itself was split into residential and in-store training with a mentor. The total residential training lasted for eight days at a national training centre and head office. The time limit given to complete the modules specified for this particular programme was twelve weeks, in-store with a mentor. However, twelve weeks being a rough guide as some required more time and candidates regularly completed the modules outside this limit. The course was tailored not only for people with experience but also for example graduates who would have had little or no experience in managing a shift. However, as this particular programme was centred towards the duty manager level its main focus was around people management, whereby it would deal with; staff motivation levels, training, receiving and giving feed back, appraisals etc, rather than actual business management i.e. managing a profit and loss account. There were seventeen modules that needed to be completed, below is a table explaining briefly what these modules were: Modules: Programme: 1-3 Orientation and Getting Started. (was completed during residential) 4-5 Cleanliness, Sanitation and Food Safety. Begins by basic training as would be for all members of staff within the organisation, then becomes more involved in how to effectively manage a team to ensure food safety and cleanliness standards are high as they are constantly observed and monitored. 6-7 Safety, Security and Crisis Management. How to ensure the safety of staff and customers on shift, including health and safety. Basically teaches the manager how to deal with anything from a power cut to an armed robbery. 8-9 Product Excellence. Begins quite basic as to how to identify an out of date product, then becomes more in depth regarding basic stock control, ordering procedures etc. 10-12 Basic Human Resource and Labour Management. Dealt with how to effectively manage a team, including exercises on legal responsibilities of a manager with regards to discrimination, grievance procedures and disciplinary action as well as staff training issues, coaching, how to motivate a team and managing cost of labour on a shift-to-shift basis. 13 Service Recovery. How to prevent, anticipate and deal with customer complaints and how to effectively observe and analyse team member performance to reduce the risk of a complaint. 14 Opening the Restaurant. 15 Shift Change. 16 Closing the Restaurant. The above three points (14-16) are self explanatory. Trainee managers were expected to work through these whilst observing the mentor complete the tasks in order to see how the aspect of previous modules were put into practice for example; stock control, security, cost of labour etc. 17 Floor Management. Dealing with problems prior to them becoming formal complaints or even accidents. This included the figure of eight walk, prioritising new unexpected tasks and team member recognition. The modules were very general, however, before putting theory into practice observation played a vital role, whereby trainees were to observe their mentors completing certain tasks in order to learn how to tailor tasks to suit the environment. Upon completing the training there was a test followed by an interview with the Area Manager in which the test results were discussed and the standards of completed modules were assessed. The informal approaches used whilst completing the management development programme was the mentor advising best practices for within the restaurant. The formal approaches used were the completion of modules and work books as well as observations where both candidates were observing the mentor and the mentor observing the candidate. The programme in itself prepared the trainees for a position as duty manager. The programme was learner centred and in some cases lack of motivation or resources meant that it lasted longer than the original given deadline of twelve weeks. There were both external and internal factors that influenced the development of duty/shift managers working. The main external factors were that being a food preparation industry, there were many laws and government regulations pertaining to food, safety and obviously regulations for health and safety and employment laws that needed to be learned and put into practice. The main internal factors that influenced management development were the standards set by the company which every manager and team member were expected to have extensive knowledge of. This covered every aspect of the business from the way tables were set to uniform standards to dealing with complaints in a professional manner, which involved more in depth training for management trainees. Although the training provided to trainee managers was quite extensive, practical experience gained via mentors seemed more knowledgeable, as stated quite clearly in the quote below from a previous trainee manager: I feel that I learned a lot from the course, the modules and the work books as it introduced me to a lot of legal aspects of the food industry which I would not have learned otherwise, but I found that I learned more from the time spent with my mentor about how to be a manager that team members respected. As recognised by A.Mumford (1993) there are five stages in the evolution of thought about what managers do; these are [1] The generalisation stage [2] The scientific stage [3] The management by objective stage [4] The contingency/ realistic stage [5] The competency stage .. Many organizations are turning to behaviour assessments and personality trait testing for both hourly workers and managers. Back in the late 90s, only 5 percent of 500 companies used some type of assessment. Today, that figure is climbing to 65 percent. A year 2000 study by American Management Association showed nearly half of 1,085 employers polled use at least one assessment in their interviewing process. Assessments can help: * Individuals identify their strengths, know which jobs they are best suited for, and design a development plan to overcome shortcomings. * HR managers predict a job applicants success before they are hired. * Business owners understand the temperament and work style of individual employees and managers. * Supervisors can give performance feedback to people in a style they understand and accept for improving performance and accelerating professional development. * People enhance communication, understanding, and improve personal relationships. * Sales managers select, hire, develop, and motivate super sales people. For example a company would use the assessment process to improving their hiring and recruitment process. If for instance, previously they made decisions based on the candidates resume and then hired the person based on their gut reaction. Once hired, many of these new people created friction, had bad work ethics, and their attitudes had a negative impact on their co-workers. Conclusion: Developing people is less expensive than firing them. By understanding behaviour differences an organization can align an employees motivations with the companys mission. Assessments also help individuals reduce conflict and get along better. Furthermore, co-workers appreciate each persons unique strengths and abilities. With this knowledge organizations and managers can maximize the abilities of their workforce in ways to help make all employees star performers. References: Lessem, R.
